Students at Saints Philip and James School honor veterans

Earlier this month, scouts from Saints Philip and James School in Phillipsburg learned a valuable lesson out of the classroom - A lesson in sacrifice and gratitude.
SSPJ Boy Scouts, Cub Scouts, Girl Scouts, Brownies, and Daisies gathered outside the school to pay tribute to those who died in the country's service.
Boy Scout leader, Bob Frasca, assembled students in the front of the school and shared the significance of the day, referencing Armistice Day and the WWI Treaty of Versailles.

HACKETTSTOWN -- Dr. Keith Morgen, assistant professor of psychology at Centenary College, has been named guest editor of an upcoming issue of the professional publication, "The Journal of Addictions and Offender Counseling."
Morgen will be featured in a special issue, which will be published in October 2009. Its focus will be on spirituality and religion in addictions counselor training and practice.
He holds a Ph.D. in counseling psychology from Lehigh University and was a pre- and post-doctoral Research Fellow funded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse.

Brooks."One of the Foundation's goals is to help students in any way we can and scholarships are one of those ways," said Samir Elbassiouny, WCCC Foundation Director. "These are clearly deserving students and we are honored to help them along financially in their educational pursuits. This is another opportunity for the foundation to invest in Warren County's future."
Among the students who received scholarships were Lisa Lippincott, Camille Del Rosario, Natalie Fernandez, Aimee Hills, Theresa Johnson, Ryan Leonard, Erin Sipley, Anthony Torres, Michele Brenner, Mary Cowan, Toni Fletcher, Kathryn Foresta, Laura Valderrama, Nancy Zeh, Katie Kline, Jordan Roehrich, Leeann Romberger, Amaris Velazquez, Stephanie Victorin, Travis Bendl, Galyna Bushko, Kimberly Eichler, Laterra Howard, Brittany Melnick, Alexandra Wehr, and Jasmine Williams.

Rosa Perez, World Language and Spanish teacher at Hope Township School, was selected for special recognition for the first marking period of 2008-09.
The Hope Township Board of Education and Leadership Team created and instituted a quarterly recognition program this school year for staff members who: contribute to the learning environment; have outstanding development/implementation of a lesson/unit; have exceptional use of technology or differentiated instructional strategies; and develop/host a special activity.
Perez was nominated and chosen for her extraordinary work to support instruction for two new students who entered the United Sates this summer and speak no English. In addition to her regular assignment of teaching World Languages to grades K- 6 and Spanish to grades 7-8, Perez works with the two students individually and in class support to help them assimilate into the language and orient them to a new culture, country and school.

HACKETTSTOWN -- Wolfgang Gstattenbauer, a retired Mars Snack Foods executive, was recently named as a Centenary College Trustee at the institution's Board of Trustees Meeting last month.
A former member of Centenary's Board of Trustees, Gstattenbauer is recognized as a distinguished alumnus and supporter of the College.
During his nine year tenure as a trustee, which ended in 2005, Gstattenbauer advocated on his alma mater's behalf on countless occasions, including securing an unprecedented monetary donation from M&M/Mars, now Mars Snack Foods.

HACKETTSTOWN -- Tilly-Jo Emerson, an organizational development consultant, was named as a Centenary College Trustee at the institution's Board of Trustees Meeting last month.
Emerson is the principal of Marshall, Towell & Emerson (MT&E, LLC), Inc., as well as a founder and former board member of the Community Foundation of New Jersey. MT&E provides the corporate, religious and not-for-profit sectors with management consultant focusing on organizational growth and development, group process and systems theory.
In addition, along with Rev. Robert C. Morris, Tilly Jo co-founded the "Partners with God" and "Nourishing Spirituality" programs originally funded by the Episcopal Church Foundation and more recently by the Trinity Foundation.

Powder Puff Football game being held at Phillipsburg High School

PHILLIPSBURG - Phillipsburg High School Student Council is sponsoring a "Powder Puff Football" game at 7 p.m. on Monday, Nov. 24 in Maloney Stadium at Phillipsburg High School.
In anticipation of the big, Thanksgiving game, the Easton Police Department will be taking on the Phillipsburg Police Department at 6 p.m. and the Easton Senior girls will play the Phillipsburg Senior girls at 7 p.m.
Half-time entertainment will feature Easton and Phillipsburg Senior boys performing cheerleading routines.

BELVIDERE -- Belvidere High School is holding a Talent Show at 7 p.m. this Tuesday, Nov. 25 which is open to school students as well as the general public. Admission is $5 at the door.
There will be 18 acts competing in two categories, elementary and high school, featuring students performing clogging, dance, vocals, drums, guitar, and with rock bands.

The Seeing Eye honors Hackettstown student

Laura O'Connor of Hackettstown has received a scholarship from The Seeing Eye Inc. for raising puppies for its dog guide school.
The $1,000 scholarship was presented to O'Connor as part of a Family Day program at The Seeing Eye office in Morristown. She is a freshman majoring in speech pathology at James Madison University, Harrisonburg, Va.
O'Connor has raised puppies for three years as a member of her 4-H Puppy Club. She taught her puppies basic obedience, attended Puppy Club meetings every month, exposed her puppies to social situations and provided the puppies with companionship. After one-and-a-half years she returned each puppy to The Seeing Eye for formal training.

This team from North Warren came out on top in the county's "Battle of the Minds" tournamentMore than 100 seventh and eighth grade students working in groups of four answered a variety of questions in two different rounds in the competition.

HACKETTSTOWN -- Centenary College has recently expanded its curriculum to include a certificate in Learning and Technology, which is designed specifically for practicing kindergarten through 12th grade teachers. Its focus is practical applications of technologies in the classroom.
This program is comprised of five three credit courses, which will be offered online and accelerated. Each course has activities, strategies, and techniques that are immediately applicable to the classroom. Students will engage in projects geared toward incorporating technology into lessons and preparing teachers to be leaders in their districts on technology integration.
One major advantage to online learning is that it provides each student the flexibility to complete their coursework when it is convenient for them.

SIFE, the Students in Free Enterprise club at Centenary College in Hackettstown, is implementing "The Power of Possibility."
The focus of this unique project is to change the lives of aspiring and existing entrepreneurs throughout the world by providing them with guidance related to creating new businesses, as well as expanding already existing companies.
To showcase the businesses SIFE is working with, SIFE sponsors an International Project Exposition in the Front Parlours of the Edward W. Seay Administration Building from 7-9 p.m. Friday, Dec. 5. The event is free and open to the public.
