Halloween screening of documentary on electoral reform; prize for best political costume

    by Suburban News
    Monday October 27, 2008, 11:31 AM

WESTFIELD--On Oct. 31 at 7:30 p.m., Union County Peace Council will sponsor a free Halloween pre-election screening of Call It Democracy. This documentary investigation and discussion of electoral reform will be shown at the First United Methodist Church, at 1 East Broad St. in Westfield. A special prize will be awarded for the best political costume.

In every presidential election, the person with the most votes wins - Except for President of the United States.

Do you want to see a documentary that doesn't just focus on election results, but seeks to transform the electoral process? Call it Democracy, written, produced and directed by Matt Kohn, provides an in-depth examination into the practices, principles and problems of the U.S. electoral system.

Going far beyond the hotly contested Supreme Court outcome of the Bush v. Gore 2000 election, Call It Democracy also examines other historically close and contested elections of previous centuries.

This film also provides comprehensive analysis of other areas of concern, such as voter intimidation, disenfranchisement and discrimination. It illuminates many attempted and enacted legislative and judicial "fixes", along with Constitutional amendments intended to correct inequities and injustices.
