Getting ready for Pride in Cranford awards

CRANFORD--The Cranford Chamber of Commerce is preparing for its 48th annual Pride in Cranford awards dinner. The Chamber is the only Cranford organization that honors all volunteers and organizations that make Cranford the great town it is.

CRANFORD--On Oct. 15, at noon, the Cranford Chamber of Commerce will host a Networking Luncheon, at Homewood Suites , 2 Jackson Drive, Cranford Guest speaker will be Adam Greenberg, Manager, Homewood Suites, speaking on the changes and improvements that have been made to the hotel, including a tour of the property and the rooms. Bring a friend and your business cards. Lunch will be served at a cost of $10 per person.
Since space will be limited, RSVP to the Chamber office 908-272-6114 no later than Oct 8.
Union County Sponsors Recycling Event, Oct. 18

CRANFORD--The County of Union will sponsor a special recycling event on Oct. 18, so Union County residents can get rid of household special waste, mercury thermometers and old automobile tires in an environmentally safe manner. The collection will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Cranford campus of Union County College, located at 1033 Springfield Ave. (opposite Nomahegan Park) in Cranford.
All residents of Union County are eligible to participate at no cost.
Chorus to begin singing program

CRANFORD--Metro Rhythm Chorus, a local a cappella chapter of Sweet Adelines International, announces the beginning of its POP, Performance Opportunity Program , starting Oct. 8. The chorus invites all adult female singers interested in experiencing barbershop-style singing to join them in this program. Holiday music will be provided.
Metro Rhythm Chorus meets every Wednesday night at 7:30 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church , North Union and Springfield Avenues in Cranford.
The Performance Opportunity Program will continue until Dec. 7, when all participants are invited to perform in the chorus's show, Holiday Harmony.

Matt Auda wins design contest

SCOTCH PLAINS--This year's winner of the Scotch Plains-Fanwood College Club calendar design competition is Scotch Plains resident Matt Auda. He was a fourth-grader at Brunner Elementary School when he entered the contest and is now a fifth grade student at Park Middle School. Matt created the calendar cover after driving around both towns with his mother and taking several pictures of many different scenes in Scotch Plains and Fanwood that he felt were interesting. He then chose his favorite scenes and created artwork that included what he believed was most important and special about Scotch Plains and Fanwood.

GARWOOD--The American Booksellers Association has published a list of these challenged or banned books, and the reasons for that distinction. A collection of such challenged books will be on display at the Garwood Library during the month of October.
Some of the titles may surprise you: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee, Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus by Barbara Park, Diary of a Young Girl by Anne Frank, Gone With the Wind by Margaret Mitchell, Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck, Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder, Snow White by The Brothers Grimm, and Alice in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll...the list goes on.
Penguin makes a splash at Clark library

Angela Pizza, supervisor of penguins at Jenkinson's Aquarium, talks to the crowd while holding Dassen, an African penguin, at the Clark Library on Sept. 28.CLARK--Hoards of families gathered at the Clark Public Library on Sept. 28 to catch a glimpse of an unusual visitor: The guest of honor, an African penguin named Dassen, was in town for one of the library's special Sunday afternoon programs.
Dassen was a crowd pleaser from the moment she came out of her carrier. A rapt audience watched as she waddled on top of a table, occasionally squawking and wrapping her neck around her handler's arm.

Clark/Linden-A Healing Mass will take place on October 15, at
7:45 p.m. at St. John the Apostle Roman Catholic Church, located at 1805 Penbrook Terrace in Clark/Linden (on Valley Road in Clark, off Stiles Street in Linden). All who are in need of physical, emotional, relational and spiritual healing are invited to attend.
Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, Individual Eucharistic Blessing and Benediction will be part of the event. Participants are invited to stay for refreshments following Mass.
