Bikini contests are often staples of island spring breaks, Shore bar promotions and college frat parties (along with other, less tasteful methods of evaluation). It is rare to stage such a seemingly superficial event in the wake of senseless tragedy. However, for Jason Stender and friends, grief brought a renewed reverence for life, and that included a bikini contest.

It seems like we've had a lot of Wildwood coverage this year- which is odd for our little blog- we tend to concentrate on the Northern Shore scene (although long-time readers may remember the Beach Bloger named "Wildwood" who reported from... well, where else?). So I have no intent on treading the same ground. You get it at this point.
BUT! Wildwood IS pretty much my favorite place on earth, and it just wouldn't feel right to ignore my recent trip. So instead of you giving you a play by play I'm gonna highlight some of my favorite points of interest.

A few years ago, when Belmar was a little more amicable, I witnessed from our rented front porch a unique sight. Emerging from the corner of 18th and Ocean came a swarm of bicycles- their riders, uniformly dressed in orange T-shirts, swerving sporadically while ringing bells. It was a massive herd- about thirty in number- three sheets to the wind, and slamming into each other while attempting to navigate the weathered streets. A closer inspection of one fallen biker revealed that this motley crew of road warriors were part of the "Pedal and Puke" bicycle bar crawl. An idea that both excited and terrified me equally.
They rode from one end of town to the other, hitting every musty shack with bud on tap along the way- from the obvious (D'Jais, Bar A, Boathouse), to the more obscure (Piranha Pub, McCann's, Paul's). I don't know at which point I caught them... but based on their slurred excitement and explanation, they had been well on their way for a while. It was a truly inspiring experience.

The biggest thing I have ever seen in my life. I asked the owner how he stayed in business putting so much meat on every single sandwich. "Repeat customers," he said.New Jersey residents love their pork roll. As unhealthy as the meat may be, there is no question about the Garden State's obsession with the Taylor-made ham. Among the countless businesses hawking food along the Shore, my friends and I sought to find a pork roll, egg and cheese sandwich truly worthy of writing about during our attempts to cure hangovers through the ingestion of greasy food.
