Needell: Some perspective, Jets fans
by Paul Needell/The Star-Ledger
Thursday August 07, 2008, 4:17 PM
Packers QB Brett Favre walks to the bench in the first half as the Packers host the New York Giants in the NFC Championship game.Check out the very interesting facts my bud Sal Palantonio of ESPN spit out about Brett Favre in March. Seems the worldwide leader's favorite football player has been all-too human in postseasons in the second half of his career.
All-too human? Heck, try terrible. To the tune of only three victories in his last 10 playoff games. That INT he threw to CB Corey Webster to set up Giants' NFC Championship Game overtime upset on the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field? A most common occurence for His Brettness once he hit 30.
Listen, is Favre an upgrade from Chad Pennington and Kellen Clemens? No question. Keep in mind that I am an unabashed Favre fan. No one has entertained me more during his career.
But the 2007 Favre isn't necessarily the football god he's been made out to be.
The ultimate goal is winning a Super Bowl, correct? The Jets have become a much more entertaining team. A team fans can more easily wrap their arms around once the PSL pricetag is unfurled on them in the coming weeks.
Ultimately, this was a business decision largely fueled by owner Woody Johnson. A typically short-term answer to the questions always raised by the Jets' franchise.
Yup, the more I digest this transaction, the more it wreaks of, "Same ol' Jets." Often the kings of the offseason/preseason who leave their fans teased but far from satisfied.
While Jets fans totally expect nothing but negativity from Paul Needell, I just want to point out that Brett Favre is an upgrade over what the Jets currently have. Nobody expects a Super Bowl appearance, but we do expect 3 or 4 wins that we might not have had with Chad or Kellen.
Go ahead Paul, Sal, Clark Judge and everyone else criticizing the deal, dig your holes. You all have a great history of being WRONG, so the more you write, the better I feel.
If they could have picked him up as a FA, it would have been one thing. But given the escalating draft choice compensation, this move strikes me as too much of a gamble. He's an upgrade over what they had, but this kind of an acquisition is hardly the way to lay a secure foundation.
