    Hudson GOP leaders praise Palin as McCain VP pick

    Several Hudson County Republicans embraced Sen. John McCain's choice of Sarah Palin as his running mate, saying the 44-year-old Alaska governor would energize the campaign and perhaps even attract Democratic and independent women voters to the ticket.

    "It's a good choice," said Debra Cuseglio, vice chair of Hudson County's Republican Party. "Half the country are women. Don't you think we should be represented by a woman also? It's about time."

    Shots fired at dice game, police say

    A game of dice nearly turned deadly last night in the Greenville section of Jersey City, as shots rang out but apparently did not hit anyone, police said.

    A group of men told cops they were gambling in front of a building at Rutgers and Stevens avenues shortly after 9 p.m. when three men wearing black hooded sweatshirts approached from the west, reports said.

    Red Bulls sign Touray

    The New York Red Bulls signed forward Sainey Touray of Gambia to a developmental contract today.

    Touray, 18, played for Wallidan FC of the Gambian first division from 2005-08, scoring a team-high nine goals when Wallidan won the league title in 2008. He started his career in 2003 with Tallinding United of the Gambian second division.

    Cops: Beaten up by ex-girlfriend

    A homeless man was beaten and robbed by his ex-girlfriend last night on a church stoop in Jersey City, police said.

    The 62-year-old victim told cops he was sitting in front of St. John the Baptist Church at Kennedy Boulevard and Brooks Place at 9 p.m. when the 43-year-old woman approached, grabbed his neck and punched and kicked him in the face, reports said.

    Editor's Note: State Assemblywoman Joan Quigley of Jersey City is sending dispatches from the Democratic National Convention in Denver to Hudson County Now and The Jersey Journal.

    AFL-CIO officer Laurel Brennan summed it up best when she said, "This week was physically and emotionally exhausting, but it was living history and I wouldn't have wanted to be anywhere else in the world."

    State Dem Chair Assemblyman Joe Cryan of Union got a standing ovation from convention attendees and he truly deserved it.

    State looks to reduce revolving door to jail

    New Jersey wants to know what combination of services works best to keep ex-inmates from returning to state prisons after they're released.

    A $2 million pilot program called "Another Chance" offers services to 1,300 people with criminal convictions, then tracks the results.
