Police check student IDs on the Stevens campus after the first fire on April 23, 2008 in Hoboken.A former Stevens Institute of Technology student originally charged with lighting fires in a dorm in April and threatening to blow it up pleaded guilty to criminal mischief and will likely get probation, officials said yesterday.

A seventh-grade teacher at Calabro Primary School had $12 and a cell phone stolen from her purse yesterday at the school, police said.

Did you notice a lot of police activity in downtown Hoboken on your way to work this morning?
That would be Hoboken cops chasing an alleged car thief through the streets around 8:30 a.m. today. Police caught the suspect and were able to return the stolen car to its rightful owner, an 84-year-old Hoboken woman.
Scott Blake, 42, of New York City, is charged with stealing the 2008 four-door white Hyundai Accent.

Former Fourth Ward Councilman Chris Campos.Campos pled guilty yesterday in Manhattan Criminal Court, according to a spokesperson from the Manhattan District Attorney's office.
As part of his plea, Campos must pay a $300 fine; his license is suspended for 90 days and he must enter a Drinking and Driving Program. On January 30, 2009, Campos is due back in Manhattan Criminal Court again for a compliance date, to show that he's paid the fine and completed the rehabilitation program.

Two men held up a Hoboken gas station, stealing more than $500 and leading police on a 100-mph-chase before losing them on a highway outside of town, police said.
The robbery happened just before 8 a.m. Saturday at the Hess station on Willow and 14th, said Lt. Charles Campbell, a police spokesman.

That's Dan Tumpson behind her, on the left, in green, looking at the camera.Update: Hoboken police confirmed that Daniel Tumpson was arrested and charged with obstructing the administration of law and disorderly conduct and Mary Ondrejka was arrested and charged with disorderly conduct and resisting arrest.
Two people were arrested inside Hoboken City Hall this afternoon, one because she refused to sign in at the door and the other after he interceded on her behalf, police said.
"The lady refused to sign in, walked right by him (the security guard) making some comments and proceeded to the third floor," said Public Safety Director Bill Bergin. "He kept asking her to please come down and sign in and she went into a tirade."

Hoboken Police's vice squad arrested Preston Morrissette, 41, Tuesday at 2:20 p.m. in his Marshall Street home on nine outstanding arrest warrants, said Lt. Charles Campbell.

A 25-year-old Hoboken man on PCP kneed the cop trying to arrest him in the jaw, breaking his back molar, police said.
The incident began late Thursday night after someone called 911 to report an unconscious man lying face down on the sidewalk on the 600 block of Monroe Street at about 11:30 p.m., police said.

Even this itty bitty 2-inch switchblade is illegal to carry, police say. Who knew? It turns out it's illegal to carry around brass knuckles and switchblades. And if you have one of those handy dandy knuckle-switchblade combos, definitely leave it at home.
That's what a Hoboken 20-year-old discovered after he was arrested Tuesday afternoon, according to police reports.

A Hoboken man was arrested after cops saw him selling marijuana on the 300 block of Marshall Drive, police said.
Detectives Steven Aguiar and Nicholas Burke said they saw the 21-year-old sell the pot right out in the open before it was even fully dark -- at about 6:20 p.m. last Friday night, according to a police report.

His trial has been delayed for months now.A new date for Chris Campos' trial has been scheduled to begin on Monday, Oct. 27. Cops arrested a man and charged him with shoplifting at the uptown Rite Aide after security guards spotted him trolling the store with a foil-lined shopping bag, police said.
The man didn't actually steal anything, but simply having the bag, which is used to smuggle items past the detector at the front door, qualifies for a shoplifting charge, police said.

Hoboken police began investigating the scam after they were contacted by the company that unknowingly produced the fraudulent checks.Hoboken may have the dubious distinction of being the origin of the "Publisher's Clearing House/Readers Digest Scam."
The scammers send scam-ees a check for several thousand dollars. But before they can cash it, they have to call a number to "activate" it -- at which point they're asked to give up such scammer-friendly information as social security numbers and mother's maiden names, police say.

Yikes. A Hoboken woman was charged with reckless driving and driving under the influence of alcohol after she nearly hit several people at a block party over the weekend in Chatham Township, NJ, according to the Morris County Daily Record.
Kathryn Wiles, 27, allegedly maneuvered around a saw horse barricade and drove down a blocked off section of Williams Road. There, about 40 adults and children were hanging out on the street at around 9 p.m. on Saturday.

A man was charged with criminal sexual assault after he grabbed a woman's breasts and pulled down her pants in Pier A Park yesterday, police said.
The 51-year-old victim, who comes from Bayonne, came into Police Headquarters at 7:10 p.m. to report the crime and describe the assailant, police said.

We mentioned this yesterday, but here's the New York Times story about how charges of assault, resisting arrest and disorderly conduct were dropped against Hoboken cyclist, Christopher Long.
Long was arrested during a Critical Mass bike ride in Times Square. New York City cop Patrick Pogan claimed Long was weaving in and out of traffic and that he had deliberately hit the officer with his bicycle. The incident between Long and Officer Pogan has been captured on videotape above -- you can be the judge of what really happened.

Police arrested a man they have been looking for since 2007 in connection to a shooting that followed an argument over tools, police said.
On Saturday, police received a tip that 24-year-old Domenico Cirilli, the suspect in the shooting, was living with his girlfriend on the 200 block of Sherman Avenue in Jersey City, Hoboken Police Detective Sgt. Gino Jacobelli said.

In case you haven't seen it before, that's the video of Hoboken resident Christopher Long getting body-checked and knocked off his bike by a New York City cop during a Critical Mass ride last month in Times Square.
And today Long heads into Manhattan court on a charge against him for resisting arrest after the incident. A criminal complaint against him said Long, 29, deliberately steered his bicycle into the officer, causing both of them to fall to the ground. Does it look that way to you?

As a security measure, Hudson County is installing 31 emergency sirens throughout the county, including some in Hoboken.
The Board of Hudson County Freeholders awarded a $795,000 contract earlier this month to Kevco Electric Co., of Bloomfield, and Acoustic Technology Inc., of Boston, to install the sirens at transit centers and elsewhere, reports today's Jersey Journal. The cost is being covered by a 2006 homeland security grant.
Many sirens will be placed just outside transportation hubs like Hoboken Terminal, at Exchange Place in Jersey City, and Port Imperial ferry terminal in Weehawken.

This bike looks safe, but the lock probably won't stand up to a pair of hefty bolt cutters ...Two men were arrested after an eagle-eyed observer spotted them trying to clip a bicycle lock on the 500 block of Jefferson Street early Monday morning, police said.
Police were sent to the scene at 12:28 a.m. and found two men in possession of a $500 Trek mountain bike that was later identified by its owner as stolen as well as 14-inch bolt cutters.

Hoboken police responded to a call of a suspicious package discovered this afternoon on Frank Sinatra Drive between 5th and 6th streets.
After the Hoboken PD bomb squad inspected the package, it was discovered to be personal property and not a threat, said a Hoboken city spokesperson.
Sinatra Drive was temporarily closed and is now reopened to traffic.

A drunk getaway driver was arrested after crashing the car on his way out of town, police said.
Cops were called to 110 Sinatra Drive just before 7 a.m. Sunday after two Club H Fitness employees discovered a man getting into their friend's Mazda Millennium, police said.
The men confronted with the intruder, who then ran to a Honda Accord, which was parked nearby and already filled with three other men and two women, according to a witness. He hopped in and the car took off up Sinatra Drive, police said.

According to the Manhattan District Attorney's office, Campos is due back in Manhattan Criminal Court Monday, September 22nd, Room 450B, for a possible trial.
Campos was unsuccessful in trying to have his DUI charges dropped, said Jennifer Kushner, a spokesperson for the Manhattan DA. Charges are still pending and a possible trial date has been set for the 22nd.

The building where the man was sleeping.An apparently heavily intoxicated man sent a Hoboken police officer to the hospital when he fell down, bringing the two cops trying to support him with him, police said.
Cops were called to 2 Marineview Plaza at 7:42 p.m. Saturday because a man was sleeping in the building's lobby, police said.

Police arrested a fugitive wanted for selling drugs in Hoboken ... after they found him through child support payments.
Johnny Aviles failed to show up for his sentencing in 1995 after he was arrested for selling drugs in Hoboken. Aviles' arrest came as the result of an undercover drug sting in a Hoboken public housing complex; he was later indicted on charges of aggravated assault, resisting arrest, escape and various other drug charges.
Aviles remained a fugitive for the next 13 years, until police found him yesterday in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. Investigators had tracked him down through child support payments he had made to a woman in Hudson County.

Remember those "incredible, edible egg" ads? Here's a use they didn't mention.They were called to the 800 block of Eighth Street at 10:11 p.m. Saturday. The girl's mother wanted her daughter to press charges (simple assault, probably), but in the end, the family decided not to (hence the lack of a name for the egg-throwing menace), police said.
So next time you want to get your point across, try eggs.

A Hoboken woman was arrested early Monday morning for pushing a man off a porch, sending him to the hospital with cuts and bruises, police said.
The landlord of a building on the 300 block of Jackson called cops at 2:30 a.m. When they arrived, the 23-year-old victim told police he was pushed off the porch of the building by Denise Burkhardt, 27. As he fell, the decrepit brick railing of the porch fell with him, police said, adding to the injuries.

A Hoboken woman was slapped so hard Saturday that witnesses called the cops, but when she got to police headquarters, she decided against pressing charges, police said.
Police were called to El Cuatro Bar at 87 Jefferson Street at 11:53 p.m. Saturday after witnesses saw the 51-year-old Hoboken woman arguing with a man who then slapped her, cops said.

The Associated Press originally reported that 3.4 tons of bubble solution was taken from a Hoboken storage unit, but it turns out the crime happened in North Bergen.
And even better, Hoboken Now learned today that although thieves burst performer Fan Yang's bubble when they stole his specialized soap, the Gazillion Bubble Show will go on with not a single performance canceled, including two special performances in Rahway August 1 and 2.

You'd think this bike would be safe, but cable locks are being clipped nearly every day, police say, often in broad daylight and on busy streets.Cops asked Hobokenites to keep a sharp lookout and call 911 if they see anything suspicious and apparently people are doing so: on Monday a woman stopped a bike theft in progress by calling cops and the culprits were arrested. Last month a man did the same.
While last month's attempted theft took place at 4:30 a.m., Monday's took place at 3 in the afternoon when two youths, later determined to be 12 and 15, tried to clip a lock with a 5-inch wire cutter at the intersection of Eighth and Garden streets, police said.

Police arrested a man early Saturday morning after a witness spotted him and a companion jumping on the hoods of at least three cars parked on the 300 block of Adams Street, police said.
The witness spotted them just before 2:30 a.m. and called police, but when they arrived the men, and two others who were with them booked, police said.

This unlucky bike apparently had both wheels stolen right outside the PATH station.There's been a spike in bicycle thefts this summer with at least 30 bikes or parts stolen over the past month, according to police.
Cops are asking Hobokenites to keep an eye out and call 911 if they think they see a theft in progress.
"Really there's no words of wisdom other than people around town to be vigilant and look out for their neighbor," said Lt. Charles Campbell.

A man was arrested after pulling a box cutter on a bouncer early Saturday morning, police said.
Eric Burks, 25, of Jersey City, was giving a Bar None bouncer "a hard time" so the bouncer escorted him outside just before 2 a.m., according to a police report.
Burks continued to confront the bouncer, even after an off-duty police officer, David Montanez, tried to intercede.

I'm sorry I hit him, but just look at where the spot was ...Two men were brought to police headquarters after getting into a fistfight over a parking space.
It may seem excessive, but the spot, after all, was right in front of City Hall -- during rush hour!!
On Wednesday at 5:17 p.m. police were flagged down to break up a fight over a parking space, police said.
The 23-year-old from Jersey City got his lip bloodied, the 38-year-old from Hoboken was apparently unscathed, police said.

So much for a day off. Officer Josue Velez logged an off-duty arrest while walking his coker spaniel, Princess Pea.An off-duty rookie police officer arrested two teens, one with a gun, after a foot chase through the city Monday night.
Officer Josue Velez, 22, who has been out of the academy less than a month, was walking his cocker spaniel Princess Pea on Seventh Street just before 10 p.m. when he spotted the two teens at the corner of Adams Street, police said.
Velez saw one of the teens was holding a handgun and called headquarters.
Then, with Princess Pea in tow, Velez slowly approached the teens from around the corner on Adams Street with his gun drawn.

At night, a GPS left on acts like "a billboard flashing: 'Come break into this car and steal me,'" said Lt. Charles Campbell, a Hoboken Police spokesman.There was a rash of thefts of GPS navigation systems over the July 4 weekend, with at least five units stolen, police said.
Now, one of these motorists was a from Virginia, and another from "no need to lock your doors at night" Congers, N.Y., but the rest were from Hudson County and should know better already.
The cops keep saying it, but the thieves keep finding them, beckoning from people's dashboards, so it's worth mentioning again: Do not leave your GPS units in your cars. Not only will the unit get stolen, but you'll have to repair a broken window as well. (And hey it's not like you have to lug around an entire radio like in the '80s, just slip it in your pocket or purse.)

A thief made up with $2,700 worth of clothing and jewelry, when he nabbed a Vera Bradley overnight bag, perhaps similar to this one, from a parked car.A Hoboken woman lost more than $2,700 worth of clothing and jewelry when an overnight bag was stolen out of her car, according to police.
The Vera Bradley bag, which was worth $200, contained a diamond necklace worth $1,500, a Garmin GPS system worth $300, a Sony Cybershot digital camera, an iPod, the value of which the victim didn't know, a pair of 7 jeans worth $400, and other designer clothing worth $350, the victim said.
But hmmm, might she be jacking up those prices a little bit?

In 1993, John Corea was permanently barred from working at the New York Stock Exchange for trading so improper, one NYSE official called it "egregious."

Ten months after the Hoboken PD's Community Policing Unit shut down, it reopened, with the eight-man unit moving back into the Hoboken Housing Authority office today.
"Basically it's an outreach to the public," said Lt. Kenneth Ferrante, who heads up the unit. "When you're in a police car day-to-day, you only have a couple of minutes to solve problems," he said. "Here, we're going to be digging deeper to get at the heart of the problem."
