Obama t-shirts cause controversy in downtown Hoboken

by Carly
Friday August 29, 2008, 2:52 PM

The offensive shirt.

A street vendor hawking Obama-themed t-shirts caused quite a stir at the intersection of Newark and Hudson streets in Hoboken this afternoon.

"It's insulting for me to see," one woman angrily told the vendor, who is named Frank Bongiorno. She didn't want to give her name, but said she works as a real estate agent in town.

After confronting Bongiorno, she told me, "My husband was a Vietnam veteran and when he came home, people called him a baby-killer and worse. He died for his country from complications from Agent Orange three years ago. How can you put this man's face on a shirt like that when he would not salute the flag?," she asked, referring to Obama. "How can you sell a t-shirt like that?"

Hey, Hoboken, what are doing for Labor Day weekend?

by Carly
Friday August 29, 2008, 1:28 PM

Hoboken Now harassed a couple people on the wild streets of Hoboken today, and asked them if they have any fun plans for the three-day weekend.

"I'm going to Bridgehampton -- one of my girlfriends has a house there. We're taking the Jitney there and we'll kayak, go to the beach, barbeque, do the club/bar scene. I normally go 'down the shore' but this year, it's the Hamptons. I prefer the Jersey shore; the scene is more laid back and less pretentious, but I'll be with my gal pals so it doesn't matter where we are. And the Hamptons aren't shabby!" Oneika Mays and Cindy Bryant, both of Jersey City, came to Willie McBride's last night to watch Obama make history as he accepts the Democratic nomination for president.

Barack Obama gave his acceptance speech last night -- "I'm amazed that I'm alive to see this happen -- a black man would be able to run this country," said Oneika Mays, a Jersey City resident, last night in Hoboken. "I didn't think I'd be alive to see it."

Now what's Obama's plan to make it to the White House?
