Police Log: Women thought she was 'following someone else'; charged with DWI

CRANFORD
A Highland Park woman was charged with driving while intoxicated after a concerned motorist called police to report that he was being followed on Sunday, Nov. 9.
Teowa Oatis, 32, was charged after she was stopped by Officer Steven D'Ambola at 9:30 p.m. on the 400 block of South Avenue East and was found to be intoxicated. According to a report from another driver, Oatis was following his car closely and driving erratically. Oatis reportedly told police that she believed she was following someone else.
She was charged with driving while intoxicated and careless driving and was later released pending a court appearance.

Cranford Police charged two men with possession of burglary tools after the car they were in was stopped for having an expired inspection sticker on Tuesday, Nov. 4.
Ronen Szatejfman, 25, of Roselle Park and Sarr Perera, 24, of Masbeth, N.Y. were stopped at 2:13 p.m. on North Avenue East by Officer Russell Luedecker and were charged after being found to have locksmith tools and a device used to enter locked cars in their possession.
Perera, the driver, was additionally charged with driving without a license and failure to inspect. Both men were later released pending a court appearance.

A West Caldwell man was charged with drug possession after he was stopped for driving without a seatbelt on Friday, Nov. 7.
Daniel Villone, 25, was charged after he was stopped at 10:05 p.m. at the intersection of Centennial Avenue and Raritan Road by Officer Spencer Durkin and was found to have marijuana in his possession.
Villone was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, and failure to wear a seatbelt. He was later released pending a court appearance.
Irvington man crashes on Parkway after fleeing Cranford police officer

CRANFORD
An Irvington man was charged with reckless driving and other charges after he crashed his car on the Garden State Parkway as he fled from police on Saturday, Nov. 1.
Lewis Thompson, 42, was initially ordered to stop by Officer Joseph Stulpin at 11:29 p.m. when he made an illegal turn on Centennial Avenue near the Garden State Parkway interchange. Thompson signaled as though he was going to pull over but instead turned quickly onto the Parkway. Stulpin followed briefly but stopped the pursuit.

CRANFORD
Cranford Police and the Union County Hazardous Materials Response Team responded to a Commerce Drive business on Tuesday, Oct. 28.
According to Detective Sgt. Jerry Quinn, police arrived at 10 Commerce Drive at 11:39 a.m. after they received a report that an employee had opened a piece of mail and found an unknown powder inside. The HazMat team was called to the scene and the Union County Office of Emergency Management was notified. The powder was later found not to be harmful Quinn said. Police are currently investigating whether the incident was an accident or an intentional act.

Man arrested in Garwood after drunk drive-thru

GARWOOD
A Cranford man was charged with driving under the influence after employees at a fast food restaurant alerted police that a drive-thru patron might have been intoxicated on Sunday, Oct. 12.
Richard Loxley, 45, was stopped by Officer Mario Morelli on North Avenue at 5:58 p.m. shortly after the report was made from the restaurant, located on the 200 block of North Avenue.
According to Captain Leonard DiStefano, an employee at the fast food restaurant saw Loxley discard an empty wine bottle while he was waiting in line for the drive thru window. When the employee questioned him, he reportedly became combative and cursed at her. After Loxley left the restaurant, employees contacted police who stopped him a short distance away.

A borough man was charged with the second degree aggravated assault of a 16-year-old juvenile on Thursday, October 2.
Robert Piper, 18, was arrested by Detective Sgt. Tim Dowd last Thursday at 3:15 p.m. on charges that he assaulted a Kenilworth boy, following an investigation. Piper, who is accused of causing "severe bodily harm" to the victim, was released on $25,000 bail pending a Superior Court appearance.

Clark resident driving car without tire in Cranford charged with DWI

A Clark man was charged with driving while intoxicated and other charges after he was stopped for driving a car with no front tire on Saturday, September 27.
Shandon Bilcher, 31, was charged after he was stopped by Officer Brian Lopez at the intersection of Centennial Avenue and Raritan Road at 2:39 a.m. for causing sparks on the road as he drove. Bilcher was charged with driving while intoxicated, driving with a suspended license, careless driving, and refusal to submit to a breath test. He was later released pending a court appearance.

A Clark man was charged with driving while intoxicated and careless driving after he was stopped for crossing the center line on Tuesday, September 23.
Daniel DiFabio, 36, was charged after he was stopped at 1:06 a.m. by Officer Patrick Fay on Springfield Avenue near the Westfield border and was found to be intoxicated. DiFabio was later released pending a court appearance.

A South Carolina woman was charged with driving under the influence, careless driving, and driving without head lights after she was stopped on Saturday, September 20.
Shannon C. Hull, 32 of Conway, South Carolina was charged after being stopped at 11:40 p.m. by Officer James Wright at the intersection of South Avenue and Center Street. Hull was charged after she was seen driving without head lights and was found to be intoxicated. She was later released pending a court appearance.

A juvenile from Union was charged with drug possession after he was stopped for driving nearly 20 miles over the speed limit on Saturday, September 13.
The 17-year-old male was stopped by Officer Joseph Stulpin for reportedly speeding on Centennial Avenue at Hayes Street at 9:01 p.m. and was found to have marijuana in his possession. The juvenile was charged with possession of marijuana, possession of paraphernalia, possession of a controlled dangerous substance in a vehicle, and speeding. He was later released to a family member pending a court appearance.

An Elizabeth man was charged with theft and other charges after he reportedly stole a purse and led police on a car and foot chase on Friday, September 5.
Arturo Ramirez, 25, reportedly took a purse from a baby stroller on Doering Way at about 2:52 p.m. and fled to Springfield Avenue in a car. Police officers in route to provide security at Musicfest saw the vehicle and pursued Ramirez.
Lt. Stephen Wilde chased the vehicle to North Union Avenue and Lennox Avenue where Ramirez abandoned the vehicle. Officer John Rattigan pursued Ramirez on foot while Wilde drove onto Cranford Avenue where he cornered the suspect and tackled him.

A Linden woman was charged with driving while intoxicated and other charges after she was stopped for driving 20 miles per hour slower than the speed limit on Saturday, August 30.
Rosemary Danko, 48, was stopped by Officer Steven D'Ambola at 2:12 a.m. at the intersection of Centennial Avenue and Raritan Road for driving under the speed limit. She was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to obey a traffic signal, and careless driving. She was later released pending a court appearance.

Curtis Thomas, 33, was stopped by Office Matthew Nazzaro at 2:00 a.m. at the intersection of North Avenue and Carpenter Place. He was charged with driving while intoxicated, failure to keep right, and making an unsafe lane change. He was later released pending a court appearance.

A borough man reported on Monday, August 25 that over $10,000 in charges had been made on his Visa and American Express cards that he had not authorized.
The 71-year-old North 20th Street man told police that his credit cards had been charged over the past few months for purchases he did not make. Detective Sgt. Tim Dowd said the Kenilworth Police are investigating the incident.

An extension ladder was reported stolen from a home on the 100 block of Boulevard on Sunday, August 24.
The ladder, valued at about $250, was stolen some time over the past two weeks. Police are investigating the incident.

A 17-year-old Kenilworth resident was charged with drug possession after police responded to a report of narcotics activity in Lincoln Park on Monday, August 25.
The male juvenile was charged after Officer Thomas Stainsen found him in a parked car on Christopher Street at 8:52 p.m. that smelled of marijuana. The juvenile was charged with possession of marijuana and possession of paraphernalia. He was later released to his parents pending a court appearance.

A Rahway woman was charged with drug possession and her passenger was arrested on an outstanding warrant after the car they were in was stopped for having an obstructed view on Saturday, August 23.

A Roselle Park man was charged with burglary and theft after police responded to the report of a Centennial Avenue home being broken into on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
According to the police report, Rafael Fernandez, 53, was charged after he was seen by Officer Eugene Perrotta removing items from a home on the 300 block of Centennial Avenue at 1:11 p.m. Fernandez was held on $25,000 bail and was transferred to the Union County Jail pending a court appearance in Elizabeth.

A Kenilworth man was charged with drug possession and a Jersey City woman was arrested on outstanding warrants after police responded to a report of a dispute on Wednesday, Aug. 13.
Peter Cardella, 45, was charged with possession of cocaine and possession of paraphernalia, and Chastity Gibson, 29, was held on $4,300 in outstanding warrants from Jersey City after Detective Sgt.
Tim Dowd responded to the report of a dispute in a home on the 400 block of Washington Avenue at 4:45 p.m. Cardella was later released pending a court date and Gibson was transferred to the Jersey City Police Department.

A resident of the 100 block of N. Euclid Avenue reported criminal mischief to their residence on August 9 at 12:56 p.m. The resident claimed an unknown suspect smashed the rear window to their vehicle.
